A clever tile-laying game. A 2001 recipient of the Spiel des Jahres award.
In Carcassonne, players build the area surrounding this impressive city, one tile at a time. They then place a follower on fields, cities, roads or monasteries in order to score as many points as possible. These followers will become knights, monks, farmers and thieves, depending on where they are placed. No matter their followers' function, the player who will most cleverly use their followers will win the game...
During a game of Carcassonne, players are faced with decisions like: "Is it really worth putting my last meeple there?" or "Should I use this tile to expand my city, or should I place it near my opponent instead, giving him a hard time to complete his project and score points?" Since players place only one tile and have the option to place one meeple on it, turns proceed quickly even if it is a game full of options and possibilities.

Z-Man Games and Hans Im Glück joined forces and teams to bring out a new edition of Carcassonne. The intention is to bring this fantastic game into a new era! The wish for the new edition is that it is able to get more people into this great hobby that is board gaming, who may have been afraid to try Carcassonne because they were not drawn in by the original cover. We hope that these new players will develop a fondness for Carcassonne and join the legion of loyal fans.
Carcassonne has been present on the market for quite some time now, as you know. As many other products do over time, it was time to re-invent and adapt.
This edition is certainly not a devaluation of the outstanding artwork of Doris Matthäus. Z Man talked with her about renewing the graphics, and they found that they could refine quite a bit, but we could not make it different then what it was before. So new illustrations were needed.
The blue towers are something new. When creating the illustrations for the cover art and the tiles, they experimented with a mix of colours for the towers, as real-life towers do not have all the same coloured roof. The bright walls with the darker city grounds and the blue roofs indicate clearly where a city is still open and where it is closed, no longer causing confusion for some players. They also stand out perfectly from the environment. This should allow new players to easily see, at a glace, where they can place a tile, and also help with farmer scoring.
Just like with the Winter Edition, they wanted a lovely detailed design for the tiles. you can see many subtle touches on the new tiles. There is a life in the countryside and there are now more than seven houses in a city!
What does this mean for fans of the original Carcassonne?
The back of the tiles is identical to the existing backs in Carcassonne expansions. The front of the tiles has a different style, but the mix of “old” and “new” is 100% playable.
If you already own the game, of course, you are under no obligation to purchase the new edition. There are tons of expansions that exist in the prior edition style to keep you busy for quite some time.
At the moment, Hans Im Glück and Z-Man Games are still evaluating the possibility of relaunching existing expansions in the new style. Also new Mini-Expansions are in the works.
Are there changes to the rules?
Yes and no.
The core of the rules has not changed. The only thing that has changed is how the rules are presented. They are now simpler and easy to read through for new players. It is a more “friendly-user” rulebook.
For experienced Carcassonne players, these new rules bring nothing different to the table, if not a new way to explain the game to newcomers.
Will the new The Abbot mini-expansion be available separately?
The Abbot expansion will not be released as a separate item as its mechanic is linked to the tiles of the new version.
It may not be possible to ship very heavy items outside of the Mainland UK.
Released: 27 November 2015
